Having a Great Day by Making It a Great Day

When someone says “have a great day” to you, your first instinct would be to reply “thank you; you, too.” However, what most people don’t realize are the ways that go into having a great day. Instead of establishing a great day from hearing about having a great days, you should find ways to make it a great day. My dad told me that having a great day and making a great day are both excellent ways to live a happy, productive life, but the latter has more of a powerful impact on what you accomplish.


I found an article by Leo Babauta where he discusses 10 simple ways to make any day great. The list includes:

  1. Being present —> Instead of focusing on the past, bring yourself o now.

  2. Doing less —> Don’t feel the need to overload your schedule, and, instead, focus on the more urgent tasks today.

  3. Getting one important thing done —> If you get something big done, especially if it’s toward a major accomplishment (i.e., finding a job, applying for college), you’ll feel great.

  4. Planning your perfect life —> Pick four to five of your most important things, and build your life around those things.

  5. Decluttering —> Decluttering an area of your life, such as a messy room or desk, can have a wonderful effect on your mood and happiness level.

  6. Going for a walk —> Being outside and enjoying the fresh outdoor can help clear your head and calm yourself. Along with walking, running and biking are good forms of exercise to help relax yourself and make you feel at ease.

  7. Focusing on three projects —> Find three projects to work on until their completion, even if you don’t get them all done in one day. Doing so will keep you busy and make you feel satisfied when you complete them.

  8. Listening to great music —> Any form of music you love will make you feel relaxed and happy about life. I enjoy pop hits from the ’60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, but any decades and genres will do the trick.

  9. Watching a sunrise or sunset —> Looking at the colorful sky will fill you with warmth and see the tranquility with life.

  10. Spending time with a loved one —> Whether it’s a family member or friend, you can do anything with them. Doing stuff such as going out to eat, or to the movies or a game, or even simple spending time at home or in the park is a very nice feeling, and will make you very happy and appreciate the very important people in your life.


Life can be stressful and seem impossible at times, but using these approaches will help you to desensitize and calm yourself down. I do everything I can to incorporate all 10 of these strategies into my life, and doing so has made me a happier and healthier person. The more you implement these strategies into your life, the more you’ll appreciate life and the people that make you the happiest. So, if someone says for you to have a great day, think to yourself what you can do to make it a great day.
